In my opinion, there is nothing better than natural beauty in and of itself. Years ago I told someone dear to me not to have surgery to fix her face, but she went ahead and in turn lost what I loved about her the most. Her confidence has not grown from it and in a sense it made her worse. Remember true beauty comes from within. When you feel good you look good to everyone else and in the end self-worth and inner happiness is what it's all about. Never bow to societal pressures, never lose that inner-confidence. Remember to love yourself.

For many years, being a nerd or geek to me meant something special. Then all of a sudden being a nerd was cool. I thought, "Great, I guess this means the world would accept me more now and that I wouldn't have to hide my interests and hobbies in the closet any longer." But now that "Nerd" and "Geek" are far more cooler and into the pop culture lexicon as positives, I see more and more stupid fights break out between the nerd and geek community.

It's almost to the point where I can't reveal to Star Trek fans that I love Lord of the Rings and Star Wars too. I think the thing that tore it for me was when I saw a Trekkie get into a fist fight with a Furry at a comic convention one time.

Can't we all just get along? I mean it's time for nerds and geeks to unite and stop ourselves from becoming what we hate the most which was the higher status quo of jocks, rich folks that didn't earn their money or the beautiful model types that we couldn't have that taunted and teased us. We all need to ban together and fight this. Not just against what we fought against, but fight that inner hate within our circles. Can't we all just get along...

I just finished this piece for the TinyCo art show. This features TinyCo's own Sully for the mobile app game "TinyPets" crossed over with Little Golden Book's own "Poky Little Puppy."

It was loads of fun to make and go back to a more illustrative style. I hope you all enjoy it as well :D.

I just created a contest piece for the Scott Pilgrim & DeviantArts' Create an 8th Evil Ex contest:

Ferdinand "Furry"-ious by *mbosn on deviant ART

Description:

This is Ramona's eighth "EVIL-EX BOYFRIEND," Ferdinand "Furry"-ious. After her initial fallout with Gideon, Ramona decided to scour the internet for a new boyfriend and found Ferdinand. In her eyes Ferdinand is a 25 year-old handsome man who possesses great riches and runs a snack food company. However in reality Ferdinand is a 40 year-old man who lives in his Mom's basement and does nothing but eat snacks and could only fit in his old high-school mascot's costume due to his excessive weight. Ferdinand used a photoshopped picture of Robert Pattison in a punk hairdo to pose as Ramona's ideal man.

After Ramona found out the truth she promptly dumped him therefore angering Ferdinand. Swearing revenge after joining "The League," Ferdinand decides to use his ability of boring him with useless Star Trek trivia and smelling really bad from the mix of his sweat-stained costume and "chip-breath" to fight Scott for Ramona's love. That is if he can even get up from his seat.

I've done some new CGI stuff in Maya this week, but unfortunately for people viewing this site, it's just paint weights (the stuff we cgi artists do to stick our skin mesh to the bones of the model). When I add the controls to the model (to make it move) I'll add it next week on the site with pics.

I'm not saying he ripped my idea off, after all a reindeer using santa as his bitch is a pretty general twist on a timely tradition, that is meant to trigger humor. I just wanted to say how sometimes great minds will think alike and come across the same/similar conclusion. Our compositions are really close too! All I gotta say is hats off to you Richard, great to know how certain folks can share the same sense of humor!

No new cgi stuff this week, it was spring break and I decided to ease off on it a little so my heart could settle down. Instead I will present storyboards to my short film, "Scare-Horn in: One Hallow's Nightmare." It was a class project I took way back in 2005 when I decided to take an extra class in storyboarding with Robert Gibbs of Pixar fame. Robert was a teacher of mine in 1999 and I loved the class so much that I decided to take it again. I then came up with this storyboard as the class halloween project.

Rob had me change the ending (the original one had Scare-Horn the pumpkin-headed guy become a mall santa and the little girl "Belle-Jingles" visited him and stabbed him there). Instead the ending was changed to where he was plotting his next kill while celebrating Christmas at his house. I liked Rob's suggestion because it brought the story full circle, showing Belle-Jingles was no different than Scare-Horn as she too was a monster of her own holiday as well.

Soon I got a job working at Namco and while it's fun doing work for them, I still wanted to do animation based on my own creations. While working at Namco full-time, I cranked out this animation based on the storyboards in Flash at a rate of 1-2 hours per day at home. The whole animation took 6 months worth of homework to do altogether. This was released November 2006

The animation was met with open arms from colleagues and internet viewers. It was rated 4 1/2 out of 5 stars on You Tube. It has had over 5,880 views as of this writing and this was without hype or advertisement. To me, something like this, that is loved without hype from mainstream sponsors, is a far greater reward than someone giving me a blank statement of compliments. I was more proud of this work thank my last project, a Star Wars fan film spoof (which had far more elaborate and refined animation):

Never again will I do a fan film. For some reason I got more of a satisfaction showing my own creations. The whole experience taught me that doing art that is more of an extension of yourself, rather than doing one of someone else's creation is a far more satisfying experience for me at least.

Just beginning UV texturing. It basically means I split my 3D as if it was an orange peal and I paint it with texture, color and detail it and I attempt to put it all back together again. A real tough process. Let me know how I'm doing, for now the color is flat.

Here is an example of a front view expression sheet I use as a reference to create blend shapes for my character model's expressions. I will present a side view for reference later on. In case you don't know blend shapes are used to create "morphs" from one shape to the next so that the computer can "blend" each expression and make the transitions from one expression to another much smoother. Like stop-motion animated movies a number of heads are created to make say a character like Jack Skellington go from angry to sad. The only difference in 3d computer animation is not as many heads need to be created as the computer will calculate and generate between one extreme expression and to the next.

Here is my rough animation reel comprising of animation I've done throughout college. It uses the theme song from the classic Johnny Quest theme song from the 1960's. The sound is a bit off sync, but the animation showcase is still intact at least. Nonetheless it is a testament to my hard work throughout college:
